Healthcare Workers: How to Immigrate to Canada

It's no secret that Canada, like many other countries, is experiencing a shortage of health workers. The healthcare sector, one of the key areas of Canada's labour force, is facing an unprecedented shortage. Fortunately, the Canadian government is taking proactive steps to address this issue.

Recently, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced a new immigration stream targeted towards health workers, including doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and optometrists.

The New Immigration Stream: What Does It Mean for You?

This new immigration stream is great news for healthcare professionals seeking to work in Canada. The first round for category-based selection has already been initiated, inviting 500 health workers to apply. A second round, inviting 1,500 workers, will follow soon.

The new immigration stream is part of a broader effort to support the health workforce in Canada. The initiative seeks to retain and recruit health workers to combat the health workforce crisis, supporting a sustainable health workforce as a shared health priority for the Government of Canada and provinces and territories.

“Health professionals have been working around the clock to provide world-class care to individuals in communities across Canada, but it’s no secret that our health system needs more workers to continue delivering the quality care that people in Canada deserve. I’m excited to be here today with my colleague, Minister Duclos, to announce the first health care category-based selection round, which will increase access to permanent residence for skilled workers with health care experience. We look forward to welcoming many health professionals to our country.

Canada’s Efforts to Attract Health Workers: Between 2017 and 2022, 21,656 skilled newcomers arrived in Canada to work in health occupations. The Canadian government has been striving to streamline foreign credential recognition and improve labor mobility to attract more internationally educated health professionals. The new health care category-based selection round is expected to increase access to permanent residence for skilled workers with health care experience.
